logo Starchaser to blast off thanks to Attwater
Excerpt from NW Aerospace Alliance publication, Plane Talk (Summer 2010).
Preston based industrial laminates manufacturer Attwater has provided materials for Starchaster’s latest project, set to blast off this summer.

Starchaser Industries is the UK’s only private rocket research development company, building and launching rockets and running an educational outreach team encouraging children into science.

logo Ken Sutcliffe Retires
December 2009. We wish a very happy retirement to Ken Sutcliffe, who has enlivened Attwater over the past 11 years with his engineering knowledge and his dry sense of humour.
‘Ken brought an in depth knowledge of the Aerospace sector to the company which enabled us develop our offering in these markets. He was also well known and respected by many of our customers as someone who always got the job done’ said Director Tom Eland.
“I’ve always been a team player, so what I’ll miss the most is the craic with my colleagues and customers. However, once I’ve ploughed though all my outstanding home jobs, you might find me working at B&Q!” says Ken He’s looking forward to having more holidays, and hopes to jet off to see relatives in Australia.
When asked what people would say about him, he said “I’d be pleased if they said I was helpful. I’d like to think they’d say ‘he was pleasant enough’!” –That’s Ken, - modest as ever !

Ken Sutcliffe Retires
logo Raul Riley retires.
Attwater Group production manager, Mr Paul Riley has retired after 34 years service. Paul was widely known throughout the industry and we hope you will join us in wishing him well in his retirement.

Mr Mick Porter has now joined the production management team and will be taking on responsibility for production control from Paul.

Mick has been with the company for 25 years and has extensive product and manufacturing experience gained during his time in charge of the CNC machining unit and prior to that in the customer service and quality departments.

Raul Riley retires.
logo Custom Composites relocation.
Attwater Group are pleased to announce the relocation of Custom Composites from their premises at Hugo Street in Rochdale to their new facility at Ensor Mill in Rochdale. The new facility incorporates the manufacturing plant and equipment of Shannonvale Plastics who were acquired by the Attwater Group in December 2008 as well as the tube winding facilities from the Attwater Hopwood Street site.

The relocation has enabled processes to be streamlined, thus improving workflow and efficiency of the operation.

logo Attwater purchase adjoining industrial units.
In addition to the two buildings currently occupied, on Hopwood Street, the Attwater Group have acquired an adjoining set of industrial units on South Meadow Street. The units will add an additional 10,355 sq ft. of floor space to our existing 42058 sq ft and will enable optimisation of manufacturing processes and workflow at the Hopwood Street site.

logo New Dust Extraction System.
The Attwater Group have now taken delivery of a new dust extraction system. The new systems will remove 49230m³/Hr of air and dust from the building. With the return air system we should save some 60.7 kW – 207,140 Btu’s or 2.07 Therms and continues our commitment to reduce the companys carbon footprint. Production Director Andy Goode said, “ We have expended a great deal in the past five years. Investment in new machines has seen our ancillary systems approaching capacity. The new compressor and extraction system will allow us to continue to expand and develop in the coming years.”

On the 15th December 2008, the Attwater Group acquired the business of Shannonvale Plastics Limited, Middleton, Manchester. Shannonvale specialise in the manufacture of composite tubes.

The business of Shannonvale has been transferred to the newly acquired Custom Composites facility in Rochdale.

This latest acquisition strengthens the existing product range and skill-set at Custom Composites and we look forward to working closely with the customers in these market sectors.

logo Attwater Group acquires Custom Composites
The Attwater Group are please to announce the acquisition of Custom Composites Ltd in Rochdale.

Custom Composites are an established manufacturer of composite tube, based in the North West of England. They have been supplying glass fibre and carbon fibre tubes into military, sports & leisure and electrical applications since the early 1980s. The company’s product range compliment The Attwater Group's range of sheet, tube and rod and the two companies are looking forward to combining their technical experience.

In the long term the Attwater Group are planning on moving tube production to the Rochdale site whilst focusing on laminate production and machining at Preston.

That Attwater Group are now members of SBAC, the Society of British Aircraft Constructors. The society is the UK's national trade organisation representing over 2600 companies in the civil air transport, defence, homeland security and space sectors.


The affilliation will bring Attwater into closer partnership with other companies and organisations in the Aerospace sector.

Attwater Join the SBAC
logo New Compressors and Extractor.
A co-ordinated investment program over the past three years has seen the addition of a CNC Beam Saw, a vac-bed CNC router, a CNC lathe and four CNC machining centres. In support of this expansion, new ancillary equipment is also being installed in the form of new compressed air and extraction systems.

At the beginning of 2008 it was decided that both systems would be replaced. March and April saw the installation of 2 new CompAir compressors and stainless steel distribution system throughout both buildings. The new system has ample spare capacity to support future expansion.

The new extraction system is scheduled to be installed later in 2008.

logo Two Familiar Faces Join the Sales Team.
The Attwater Group would like to welcome Mr. Peter Masheter and Mr. Lee Parnell to their sales team. These names may be familiar to many people, as both have worked in the insulation industry for many years.
Sales Director, Rachael Kennedy said, “Our technical knowledge expertise is what sets the Attwater Group out from our competitors. It takes many years for a member of the team to gain the knowledge and understanding of our products and industry. To find two such individuals in such a short space of time is quite rare.”

In addition to the CNC Mini-Mill purchased earlier this year, the Attwater Group have now taken delivery of two new CNC machines. These machines were purchased in response to increased demand in the machining sector of our business.

Following Attwater’s recent accreditation to AS9100, the company has invested in a Tessa Microhite Coordinated Measuring Machine.

The company has recently seen an increase in orders for critical components, the ability to measure these components to a high degree of accuracy is becoming more and more important.

logo New CNC Mini-Mill Machining Centre.
As part of Attwater’s ongoing business improvement program, Attwater have invested in a new CNC Mini-Mill machine. The machine is now the fourth CNC machining centre in use at Attwater.

The machine has a smaller bed than the existing machining centres and is intended to relieve our larger machines of some of the smaller repetitive jobs.

In order to meet a growing demand in the machining sector of their business, the Attwater Group have added a CNC lathe to their portfolio of machinery. The machine will enable Attwater to increase the throughput of complex turned items, whilst not compromising on tolerances or quality.

Engineering Director, Andy Goode advises “We are pleased to add CNC turning to our machining capabilities. In the near future we will be looking at relocating all of our existing lathes to another part of the building. This will create a dedicated turning department and allow us to expand our existing machine shop”.

The new lathe is now commissioned and operational.

logo Attwater attain Tier 1 Airbus status.
The Attwater Group have secured a long-term contract with Airbus UK to supply machined components for wing systems.

Quality Director, Dave Swarbrick was quoted as saying; "We have been an Airbus and BAe Systems approved manufacturer for many years now. We are pleased that Airbus have extended the scope of our approval to supply them with machined component".

The Attwater Group have always been industry leaders when it comes to quality, having the attained ISO 9000 approval in it's earliest days, attaining UKAS certificate number of just 0100.

Attwater attain Tier 1 Airbus status.

The Attwater Group are please to announce the addition of AS9100 accreditation to their list of quality approvals.

Attwater already hold ISO9001, Airbus, BAe Systems, BAe Military and Raytheon approvals, however have been working more closely with companies in the aerospace sector in recent years.

Quality director, Dave Swarbrick commented, “Following recently attaining status as a tier 1 supplier to Airbus, AS9100 was the next logical step. Attwaters have always had a strong quality ethos, and we were very please to pass the AS9100 audit without a single non-compliance”
